AO Recon NA Complex Arthroplasty Course at CCJR®
Revision and complex total joint reconstruction are among the most challenging cases in arthroplasty—and some of the hardest to get meaningful hands-on experience with during training.
The AO Recon NA Course—Complex Total Hip & Knee Arthroplasty for Residents and Fellows at CCJR® is designed to help close that gap.
This full-day course combines 3.5 hours of facilitated small-group discussions with 3.5 hours of hands-on primary and revision arthroplasty using human anatomic specimens. You'll work through complex clinical decisions with expert faculty, then take those concepts directly into the lab.
Every participant completes dedicated hip and knee lab sessions, so you leave having practiced the techniques—not just watched them.
From case discussion to surgical strategy to hands-on execution: the course is designed to connect clinical decision-making directly to technical practice.
From Clinical Decision-Making to Hands-On Practice
Faculty-led lectures, case discussions, and small-group sessions will prepare you for the lab experience and explore some of the decisions that make complex and revision arthroplasty particularly challenging.
- Acetabular bone loss in THA: Assess and classify defects and select a reconstruction strategy based on remaining bone stock.
- Instability in revision total arthroplasty: Identify the cause of instability and match the solution to it.
- Zonal fixation in revision TKA: Explore stable fixation across the epiphyseal, metaphyseal, and diaphyseal zones, including the roles of cones, sleeves, and stems.
- Level of constraint: Consider how ligament and bone deficiency influence constraint selection and the trade-offs of increasing constraint.
- Chronic PJI: Work through a practical approach to diagnosis and staged versus single-stage management.
3.5 Hours in the Bioskills Lab
Put those concepts into practice with 3.5 hours of hands-on lab time using human anatomic specimens.
Participants rotate through dedicated hip and knee stations in small groups, with approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes focused on each joint.
- Practice complex primary and revision techniques under direct faculty guidance.
- Work through both hip and knee procedures.
- Ask questions and discuss technical decisions with faculty at the table.
- Apply concepts covered in the course directly in the lab.
Learn Through Real Cases
Complex arthroplasty rarely comes with one obvious answer. Case-based sessions give you the opportunity to examine different approaches and hear how experienced surgeons work through challenging decisions.
The program includes small-group discussions of real hip and knee cases, with approximately 50 minutes dedicated to each, plus a rapid-fire faculty panel tackling challenging cases and questions.
A lunch lecture featuring a live robotic demonstration adds another perspective on contemporary arthroplasty practice.
Who Should Attend?
Residents: Build your foundation in complex reconstruction before fellowship and gain hands-on revision experience that can be difficult to obtain during residency.
Fellows: Sharpen your revision decision-making and surgical technique as you prepare for independent practice.
